April 2 marks World Autism Awareness Day
02.04.2014
World Autism Awareness Day is observed on 2 April.  On this day, different events are organized worldwide which aim to raise awareness about people with autism spectrum disorder. On this occasion, Armenian State Pedagogical University organized a discussion and review of a film, as well as an exhibition of handmade artworks made by autistic children.

The event was attended by future special educators, as well as students of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics and the Faculty of Primary Education.

“One in 88 children has been identified with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). It is estimated that autism affects one in 70 boys. A new case is diagnosed almost every 20 minutes. Statistics suggest that the rate of autism is increasing 10-17 percent annually,” said Janna Paylozyan, Head of the Department of Logopaedics and Rehabilitation Therapy. She underlined that people with autism are talented individuals with rich inner world.

“What is happiness? It is a strange feeling in your breast…” This is the formula for happiness given by Sona Shatalova, the main character of the film “Autism.” She believes that human life is incomplete unless he has found his place in the world.

The notes the heroine has made in her diary have become a wonderful poem – her only chance to share with the world her knowledge and feelings, which cannot be felt by others.

During the ensuing discussion the presentees were given booklets about autism, which inform people about the signs and symptoms of autism and offer special instructional approaches and methods for children with autism.

World Autism Awareness Day was designated by the United Nations General Assembly in 2007 and has been observed on April 2 ever since.
