Ella Kafyan, Associate Professor at the Department of Special Pedagogy and Psychology of the Faculty of Special Education, today shared her impressions from the Sochi 2014 Winter Paralympic Games with the students and lecturers of the Faculties of Special Education and Primary Education.
The special educator spoke about the sporting success and achievements of individuals with limited abilities, noting that since the 18th and 19th centuries active movement has been considered to be one of the main factors promoting rehabilitation of people with disabilities.
The first attempts to involve people with disabilities in sporting events date back to the 19th century when the first sports club for deaf people opened in Berlin in 1888.
Ella Kafyan told in detail about the opening and closing ceremonies of the 11th Winter Paralympic Games, spectacular episodes, showed photos of conveniences provided for people with limited abilities. Let us mention that double-arm amputee alpine skier Mher Avanesyan has been representing Armenia at Winter Paralympic Games since 1998.
Speaking about the attitude of Armenian society towards people with disabilities, the Associate Professor said she has observed increased attention and tolerance among people. “New ideas emerge in the sphere and the city is being adjusted to the needs of people with disabilities; they are becoming full-fledged members of society.”
