“Russian continues to be in demand”

Armenian State Pedagogical University today hosted Russian Ambassador to Armenia Ivan Volynkin, who came to discuss with the ASPU Rector, vice-rectors, teaching staff and students problems connected with the teaching of the Russian language in Armeniaand explore new avenues for fostering cooperation.

ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan presented the activity of the Department of Russian Language, underlining that the Russian language lessons had been added in the curricula for all specialities. “Among other universities that have Russian Language Departments, Armenian State Pedagogical University has one peculiarity: most of entrants taking full-time and distance learning courses are from regions, and upon graduation, they return to the regions to dedicate themselves to the teaching and spread of the Russian language.”

 

Tigran Mikaelyan, Dean of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, Ruzan Tadevosyan, Head of the Department of Foreign Literature, Melanya  Astvatsatryan, Head of the Department of Foreign Language Teaching Methods, and Bella Yesajanyan, Professor of the same Department, assured the guest that Russian is the first compulsory subject to be taught in Armenia after Mother Tongue, and everything is done to keep the language alive.

 

Ambassador Ivan Volynkin highlighted the meeting with the University’s teaching staff, at the same time expressing his admiration for the level of the Russian language and its teaching methods at the ASPU. 

 

 

“Today, it is very important to transfer to young people friendly relations between Armenia and Russia that reflect the centuries-old ties between the two peoples. Many claim that the Russian language ‘has disappeared’ in Armenia but I am of a different opinion.Itis still in demand,” the Ambassador said, noting that one of his priorities is to seek and find new opportunities for cooperation.

 

 

During the meeting, lecturers presented the Ambassador the problems and challenges existing in the sphere andoffered solutions. In particular, they suggested establishing a Russian-language basic school in Armenia, developing student exchange programmes, creating e-versions of Russian-language literature, etc.

At the end of the meeting, Ivan Volynkincongratulated the presentees on First Republic Day [marked annually on May 28], and extended his warm wishes on the occasion. He also expressed hope that graduates of the Department of Russian Language imagine their future with aprofound and comprehensive understanding of the Russian language and literature.  

 

ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan awarded the Ambassador with a “Pedagogical University” medal as a sign of respect and appreciation of the role and importance of the Russian language and literature at the University.
