More than 200 young people, including a group of students of Armenian State Pedagogical University, donated blood on the occasion of the World Youth Day marked annually on November 10.
Each of the students participated in the blood donation campaign [held under the slogan “Become a donor, save a life”] clearly realizing that voluntary blood donation is a component of a healthy lifestyle, a humanitarian act and a moral duty towards mankind.
Before giving blood the young people were subjected to a preliminary medical examination to detect any obvious disease. Later they were allowed to donate blood if no contraindications were found.
Highlighting the blood donation campaign Karen Avagyan, Coordinator of the Board of Trustees of the Youth Foundation of Armenia, said the young people made it possible to speak out about the need for free blood donation in Armenia.
“The young people participated in the campaign with great enthusiasm and a clear conscience that their blood could save lives of people: they are competitive, motivated, supportive and helpful,” Karen Avagyan said and congratulated them on the World Youth Day.
Smbat Daghbashyan, Director of the Hematology Center after R. Yolyan, added in his turn that there is a shortage of blood donors in the world.
“During the treatment of malignant diseases doctors need to have at hand blood components from about 20 donors. It is here that public members reach out for help: young people give blood which is preserved in blood banks for later use in blood transfusion. As a result, we have fresh blood,” he said.
Armine Galstyan, a first-year Master’s degree student of the University, was participating in the blood donation campaign for the third time. She says she experiences new feelings and excitement each time as she knows that her blood can help save someone’s life.
The campaign was organized by the Youth Foundation of Armenia and the Youth Organization of the Republican Party of Armenia.
