Are the rights of persons with disabilities protected or not? Third-year students of the Faculty of History and Law of Armenian State Pedagogical University, and four-year students of Yerevan State College of Humanities today debated around the topic.
The future legal educators said the rights of persons with disabilities are protected in Armenia and provided arguments to substantiate their position and change public perception of the term.
Their opponents, students of Yerevan State College of Humanities, disagreed with them saying the rights of disable people are not protected in Armenia.
Let us mention that the ASPU students are currently doing their internship at Yerevan State College of Humanities.
“We should all stand ready to undertake the defense of the rights of disabled people, making it a part of everyday activities of each and every citizen.
By alienating them from our society we cannot have a civil society in the direct sense of the word. Moreover, we will create additional barriers for the people who are fighting for the rights of persons with disabilities,” said Edik Gevorgyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Law. He stressed that the protection of the rights of persons with disabilities starts from school, university and other educational institutions: every citizen should be well aware of the rights of disabled people and take steps to significantly improve these rights.
The supervisor of the internship, lecturer Gohar Marukyan added that the debate will prove advantageous to both sides: it will be effective and instructive and will strengthen the connection between the college and university and ensure students’ involvement in the teaching process.
The team of the Pedagogical University was named winner with a score of 268-223 and received a certificate of participation.
