Today, the end-of-the-year session of the University Council was held at the ASPU conducted by the RA Minister of Education and Science Armen Ashotyan.
Among those present at the session were the Council members, the President of the RA National Assembly Mr. Galoust Sahakyan, the Vice-President Mr. Eduard Sharmazanov, the Minister of International Economic Integration and Reforms, the RA Deputy Prime Minister Mr. Vachei Gabrielyan, the NA Deputy Ms. Rouzanna Mouradyan, the MES Deputy Minister Mr. Manouk Mkrtchyan, the Director of the MES National Institute of Education Mr. Norayr Ghoukasyan, the Deputy Director Ms. Anahit Bakhsyan, the Head of the State Inspectorate of Education Mr. Aram Karapetyan, the Head of the Education Department of the Yerevan City Hall Ms. Gayanei Soghomonyan, and other ASPU Council members.
The first question on the agenda was the selection of the Chairman of Council of the Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan; out of the proposed suggestions the candidacy of the President of the RA National Assembly Mr. Galoust Sahakyan was nominated, who was later on elected on the mentioned position in an open ballot.
“Strong educational system is the basis for a powerful state; it is the environment where people not only create but also guide a whole society. I would like to highlight the importance of the liberalization of education in our country; being under the control of the state, the sphere must independently dispose its management mechanisms,” said Mr. Galoust Shakyan after gaining high confidence and being elected with only one vote against.
What is more, he did not consider the fact of being elected on the position of the Council Chairman as an additional workload promising to actively participate in the processes happening at the University. “This is my environment and the most important relic of my life” he added.
The ASPU Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan congratulated Galoust Sahakyan in the name of professors and students of the University, emphasizing the fact that his consent and election in the position of Chairman of Council is obliging and a great honour.
Afterwards, the film about the reporting year of the Pedagogical was presented, which was followed by the University Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan’s report about the activities carried out at the University in 2014. Subsequently, the Rector submitted the University’s budget plan for 2015.
More to the point, the Rector spoke about a number of initiatives undertaken at the University emphasizing that in the current year the financial means were mainly aimed at the University’s technical enrichment, establishment of laboratories, libraries, reading halls, improvement of scientific activities, that will contribute to the academic and research activities of the students.
In addition, Mr. Rouben Mirzakhanyan referred to the upcoming projects emphasizing the renovation of the pedagogical college after Aksel Bakunts that once belonged to the University and the idea of making one of the University buildings a student’s hostel, which will contribute to the involvement of overseas students.
“The internalization of the University continues; cooperation with foreign universities is also being approved, and new connections are being established,” he added.
Furthermore, the ASPU Rector expressed his acknowledgement to the RA President and the RA Minister of ES for always keeping the University in the center of attention and supporting it.
The Council members, in their turn, mentioned in their speeches about the reforms carried out at the University with great content. Later on there were question and answer discussions.
Besides, the Council evaluated acceptable all activities realized at the University in 2014 and approved the budget estimates plan for 2015.
At the end of the session, the ASPU Professor Hravard Hakobyan granted Mr. Galoust Shakayan the Pedagogical University medal of the Chairman of Council.
