Early morning, on 6 December, the Head of the Department of Museology, Library studies and Bibliography, the founding Director of the Erebuni and Sardarapat museums, the Museum –Institute of Genocide, the winner of the USSR Minister’s Council and the RA State Awards, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor Lavrenti Barseghyan passed away in his 77.
He graduated from the Yerevan State University in 1959. From 1968-1972 he ran the restoration works of the Erebuni castle, the Garni temple, House-museum of Hovhannes Toumanyan (Dsegh). From 1973-1978 he was the Head of the Cultural-Educational Department of the ASSR Ministry of Culture. From 1978-1985 he was the Director of the SMEA, simultaneously from 1984-1985 he was the Director of the SHMA. From 1988-1991 he was the Head of the Main Department of Preservation and Use of Historic and Cultural Monuments at the ASSR Ministers’ Council, the Deputy President of RA NAS from 1992-1995.
Lavrenti Barseghyan was the author of scientific exhibitions in a number of museums.
His works referred to the summary of historical research dedicated to issues of origin and formation of the Armenian nation, the Armenian Genocide.
Besides, he has been the member of the International AS Presidency of National Security Issues (since 1988), President of the “Pan-Armenian Academy of National Security Issues” (since 2003).
Until the last day of his life Lavrenti Barseghyan worked at the Pedagogical University and passed his experience and the unlimited stock of knowledge to the students. His name will stay bright both in our nation and in the history of the Pedagogical University.
The Pedagogical University expresses his deepest condolences to the family of Lavrenti Barseghyan, his friends and relatives, colleagues and students for the irrevocable loss.
The funeral ceremony will be held on Monday at the St. Hovhannes /Kond/ church at 18:00; and the burial ceremony will take place from the Chamber Music Hall on 9 November, at 14:00.
