Professional initiative of future social workers

November 15 - December 15 is announced in Armenia a month for the protection of rights of people with disabilities. A series of events are organized in the country these days.  

 

A number of events were held at Armenian State Pedagogical University on December 4 and 5 at the initiative of third-year students of the Faculty of Educational Psychology and Sociology.

 

Within the framework of the events, on December 4 the students of the Faculty visited Skarp Health Centre NGO that deals with the health problems of people with physical disabilities and other vulnerable groups of society, vocational rehabilitation and employment issues.

 

The NGO also tries to solve employment problems as well as social inclusion of disabled youth and provides healthcare facilities for the disabled youth. 

 

Ashot Mkrtchyan, Founding President of Skarp Health Centre NGO, and the representatives of the Centre, presented the guests the history of the NGO and the success they achieved since the establishment of the Centre. 

 

Highlighting the visit of the students, Mr Mkrtchyan promised to continue cooperation between the Centre and the Faculty which was strengthened with the signing of a MoU.

 

Next, the students visited UN Office in Yerevan where they participated in an exhibition organized on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities.

 

On December 5, the students participated in a demonstrative basketball game and the subsequent awards ceremony organized for disabled people by the Pyunik Union of Disabled People.

 

Talking to old.aspu.am, the students said the two-day visits were not innovation for them: they actively follow and participate in different events related to their profession when the opportunity presents itself.
