“Let us love chemistry! Let us contemplate and reason!” First-year students of the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography specializing in Chemistry addressed their audience with these words.
The laboratory created in a classroom environment today hosted the Alchemist who tried to identify [with the help of students] the connection between Armenian letters and Chemistry.
In reply to Alchemist’s question “Where did the chemical elements take their names?” the students presented the hypothesis advanced by linguist Eduard Aghayan who said that the names of gold, silver, lead and tin represent the respective numerical values of the Armenian alphabet. For example, each letter of the word ‘gold’ had its numerical value. The sum of the numerical values of the letters equals the atomic number of the element – 79.
In the lab classroom, the future chemists also carried out interesting chemical experiments, including combustion of silver, lead, mercury and other chemical elements.
The students assured everyone that the language is the most reliable method for storing knowledge and information. Many researchers have proved that the Armenian alphabet is a logically coherent and complete system, they stressed.
“Chemistry is full of mysteries, secrets and wonders,” the Alchemist said highlighting students’ interest in chemistry: they were able to penetrate into the world of chemistry and discover amazing facts and phenomena.
Svetlana Hovakimyan, Dean of the Faculty of Chemistry, Biology and Geography emphasized the initiative of the second-year graduate student Armine Sumbulyan to organize the event within the framework of an internship. She expressed hope that in the face of the students, Chemistry will progress and regain its former significance in Armenia.
