17.12.2014

Today, the Pedagogical University hosted the lecturer of the Yerevan State Medical University after MkhitarHeratsi, Department of Public Health and Organization of Healthcare, Candidate of Medicine Ms. GayaneiSargsyan.

During the meeting organized by the Department of First Aid, Emergency and Civil Protection Ms. Sargsyan presented to the ASPU teaching-professorial team and students the aim, objectives and outcomes of the research conducted within the framework of her thesis on the subject of “Peculiarities of adolescent sex education and behaviourial risk reduction strategies”.

The Head of the Department of First Aid, Emergency and Civil ProtectionHakobGrigoryanoutlined the importance of discussing the subject noticing that it has both a scientific –theoretical and a practical meaning; as a result of rapid changes of the modern life the youth’s attitude to the sexual life, love, family, and sexual relationship obtain a new meaning.

“The discussion of the issue is particularly important from the perspective of medical, pedagogical and psychological specifications; the University prepares multi-profiled specialists for schools the majority of which do not have a profound knowledge about the underlying gender issues and peculiarities of sex education,” HakobGrigoryan mentioned.

In her turn, Ms. GayaneSargsyan noticed that the relevance, necessity and demand of the topic make the pedagogical and medical universities cooperate; it is not realistic to talk about the teenagers’ behaviourial risk studies without the direct participation of the Pedagogical University.

“The main informer of a child is the teacher; teenagers’ behaviourial manifestation is more active than that of teachers; thus, there is a serious incompliance: the reproduction of the population of Armenia displays negative tendencies; tomorrow’s reproducers are today’s teenagers, but our studies serve as a proof that the STI manifestation among the teenagers have the same tendencies like in the European countries”.

The lecturer of the Department of Public Health and Organization of Healthcarepresented the study aimed at sexual and reproductive health protection and strengthening of the adolescents underlining that positive changes of the level of awareness of teachers and significant changes in their attitude towards sexual issues may be observed.

“A teenager having a sexual experience, who receives a sex education relevant to his age, acted with a higher quality of secure sex behaviour, which was an objective and serious evaluation of the academic programme that we’ve developed,” he added.

As a matter of fact, the course has already been introduced into several pedagogical universities. Ms. GayaneSargsyan is sure that it is time to come up to the top of the pedagogical pyramid and to introduce the course aiming at the health of generation, reproduction and national security here as well.
