KHACHATUR ABOVYAN ARMENIAN STATE PEDAGOGICAL UNIVERSITY

Social Work Student Union NGO was opened at Armenian State Pedagogical University on World Social Work Day, March 17. The NGO features students of the Faculty of Educational Psychology and Sociology. 

The event was attended by lecturers and representatives of NGOs - social workers. Students congratulated them with a video focusing on the importance of the profession.

The aim of the newly-formed NGO guided by the slogan “Every obstacle is surmountable if you have supporters by your side,” is to unite future social workers around the idea “A social worker is a friend of mine and yours.”

Head of the Department Sociology and Social Work, Professor Yuri Gasparyan recalled the year when the academic discipline ‘Social Pedagogy’ was introduced into the Pedagogical University. Once again he stressed that the profession can grow and strengthen only at a pedagogical university with the application of teaching methods and pedagogical approaches.

“The profession is endowed with humanitarian principles: social workers are capable of solving problems everywhere, however, the institute has not been fully established in our country,” the professor said and called on future social workers to have a responsibility towards the profession and care for those who need the help of social workers.  

“Social worker is a calling – you either have it or not,” said Anahit Gevorgyan, a representative of the Mission Armenia NGO, who has worked as a social worker for 15 years. She was glad to know that more professionals will join their ranks in the near future.
