A few days ago, on the initiative of the ASPU Department of Professional Education and Applied Pedagogy, the University welcomed the representatives from the education sector to have joint discussions about the fundamentals of the concept of continuous education and upbringing.
“The problem of general upbringing in the history of Armenian pedagogy has been a subject for ongoing discussions. It is an important strategic issue of each state’s educational policy and system, the essential element of the policy of education sector,” the Head of the Department of Professional Education and Applied Pedagogy, Professor Aida Topuzyan said suggesting to iscuss the summary document on the fundamentals of the concept of continuous education and upbringing.
As a matter of fact, the Professor is assured that it will have an important meaning, serve for directing the attention of the whole society at the issues related to general upbringing, developing discussion and debates about it, taking them from the narrow professional pedagogical sphere to the wider public attention, and conducting active research activities.
“The concept note is based on humanistic pedagogical ideas,” Ms. Aida Topuzyan mentioned, noticing that it is the learner that develops himself/herself, the teacher is only guiding and assisting, i.e. the teacher is the “co-developer”; he/she should be ready to “share the power” with the learner.
In addition, Professor Topuzyan referred in her report to the fundamentals of general upbringing and suggested to the representatives of the sector to decide what kind of person to develop and which institutes are responsible for that.
The necessity of having a concept note on general upbringing , the name of the concept note, the fundamental ideas, provisions, principles, methodological grounds, as well as the aims, issues, criteria of upbringing and education as well as defining the responsibility for thereabout – these are the issues about which heated discussions began.
Further on, the Head of the ASPU Department of Sociology and Social Work, Professor Yuri Gasparyan in his turn , assured that the family, the school and the state are all responsible for the general upbringing and education of the child.
“Today’s Government is running a weak social policy; individuals’ social development is one of the important aspects, the qualitative part of which is unfortunately weak in our days”, the Professor added and assured that in that task it was important to act in a joint programme involving renowned scientists.
Likewise, the Project Leader of Teachers professional development and training of the RA MES Educational Programmes Center Mr. Karen Melckonyan could observe that the document could be considered as the conceptual fundamentals of the continuous upbringing and education component unless legislation separated education from the upbringing.
“The adoption of the document is a major issue not only to ensure effective operation of the education system, but it is also a necessity from the perspective of a collaborative society. It is in fact, obvious that education and upbringing spreads on everybody – the educators, the learners, all members of the society”, Mr. Karen Melckonyan mentioned, offering to separate in the document the sections on the concept of upbringing and its processes.
“Developing the general upbringing concept is a strict necessity; the upbringing in the modern stage should be clearly defined ; similarly, the subjects should also be determined”, the ASPU Head of the Department of Theory and History of Pedagogy, Professor Laura Asatryan emphasized, adding her suggestions on the issues.
Likewise there were other speeches made on the concept note.
“The general upbringing concept is slightly belated,” the ASPU Vice Rector for educational affairs Ms. Srbouhi Gevorgyan stated; afterwards she presented her approaches over this problem expressing hope that the process would be continuous and will have feasible and successful results.
The undertaker of this initiative, the Head of the Department of Professional Education and Applied Pedagogy , Professor Aida Topuzyan put in, “After hearing numerous opinions and suggestions it is difficult for me to outline our further steps at this stage; nevertheless it is also indisputable that our country needs an concept on general upbringing and education”.
