The event organized by pupils of the ASPU Basic College in commemoration of the centennial of the Armenian Genocide was supplemented by an exhibition of drawings and handmade works of College pupils.
Pupils from grades 10-12 worked for over a month on the works conveying their emotions and feelings through miniatures, paintings and tapestries that were showcased at the exhibition bearing the slogan “We Remember and Demand.”
Naira Safaryan, Principal of the ASPU College, said she was proud to see pupils express their feelings about the Genocide in such a unique way.
She also assured the attendees that none of the initiatives organized by the College had been formal or binding: they were mainly organized by pupils who expressed their emotions and feelings, thoughts and sincere words about the historical reality from the bottom of the heart.
Now that the entire nation is exerting efforts for the international recognition of the Armenian Genocide, we also tried to have our modest contribution to the cause.
The works convey the feelings and thoughts of our pupils,” said Sos Harutyunyan, a teacher of Painting.
The exhibition was followed by a lecture, with Dean of the Faculty of History and Law Edgar Hovhannisyan informing pupils about the growing tide of recognition of the Armenian Genocide and the recent processes, including the adoption of a resolution by the European Parliament on the centenary of the Armenian Genocide and the speech of Pope Francis who described the slaughter of an estimated 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks as “the first genocide of the 20th century” during a mass in St. Peter’s Basilica on Sunday.
“Within the framework of the subject History of Armenia, pupils receive information on the historical fact but the series of events marking the 100th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide change the situation and need explanation and elaboration,” Mr Hovhannisyan said adding that young people should be armed with cold and reserved emotions and common sense to be able to fight for our just demand.
The events commemorating the centennial of the Armenian Genocide will continue at the ASPU College in the coming days.
