"Bridge of Hope" NGO organized a meeting at Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) that featured representatives from different universities. The aim of the meeting was to discuss the commitments assumed in November 2010 within the framework of the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, the implementation of the Convention, current problems and future steps.
The meeting brought together lecturers from Yerevan State University, Yerevan State Medical University after M. Heratsi, Eurasia International University and ASPU.
The meeting focused on the transition from one education level to another for persons with disabilities or special educational needs, prerequisites and opportunities for ensuring their continuing education.
Each of the participants presented the organization of admission of children with disabilities and methods of assessing their educational needs at their universities, spoke about the needs of the small number of students with disabilities who are studying in Armenian universities.
They also spoke about their wishes concerning the education of persons with disabilities, presented their vision of organizing the complete education of these people and made proposals.
Armine Avagyan, Dean of the Faculty of Special Education, ASPU, the moderator of the discussion, said the questions raised during the meeting would enable them to provide the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities with information about reasonable accommodations at universities [for persons with disabilities], quality assistance, assessment of educational needs, provision of continuing education, organization of internship and transition from one level of education to another.
Armenia ratified the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in November 2010 and has been gradually implementing its commitments ever since. Under the Convention, Armenia shall promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities. After the ratification of the Convention, the member states are to present [every two years] to the relevant Committee a report about the implementation of the Convention.
