The last meeting of the 2014-2015 academic year was held between the Rector Rouben Mirzakhanyan and the Heads of Departments at the Pedagogical University; the issues on the agenda referred to the postgraduate education and accreditation process of the University.
At the very beginning of the meeting the ASPU Rector spoke about the necessity of raising the quality of the postgraduate education; introduction of research activities at the postgraduate level and the unique thematic selection of MA theses that would foster the process.
Next in turn, the Academic Vice-Rector Ms. Srbouhi Gevorgyan reported on certain changes foreseen to the ASPU MA programmes and activities aimed at increasing the quality of education during the academic year 2015-2016.
She mentions that improvement of educational programmes and curriculum can obviously be noticed; normative basis for all 49 programmes have been reviewed, they have been brought up to the international standards, the best specialists of the country are teaching at the postgraduate courses of the ASPU, replenishment of the laboratory with relevant equipment continues, but most of all it is needed to raise the quality and effectiveness of activities for postgraduate these.
Likewise, Srbouhi Gevorgyan presented the main directions aimed at raising the quality of theses resulting from a series of discussions and reports. The first step must be the initial planning of the postgraduate student’s activities in the learning process, presenting the corresponding schedule, reviewing the base of topics for the postgraduate theses, involvement of such topics which have been less explored or not studied at all.
Similarly, the Vice-Rector highlighted the practical justification of the topic of thesis, the novelty, the issue of selection of supervisors, the submission of the plan-format of the research activity, the review of the thesis’ assessment components and requirements in the 100 points grading scale, etc.
On this point, there were several remarks on the subject, the Heads of Departments made suggestions, particularly to differentiate the criteria for the undergraduate and postgraduate levels, to reduce the number of postgraduate students at one and the same supervisor, to start the realization of the submitted programme already at the undergraduate level, to emphasize the narrow specialization. Additionally, the activation of the students’ university life and establishment of the best educational environment were also paid importance to.
And last but not least the, the Vice-Rector for Education Quality and Distant –Learning Mr. Tigran Ayvazyan presented his report on the process of institutional accreditation of the University. He spoke about some details of the meetings of the institutional accreditation experts group, the initial assessment of ten criteria, after which he promised to provide comprehensive information on the subject straight upon the end of the process.
