Memorial Plaque of Outstanding Scientist Unveiled

A memorial plaque for renowned pedagogue and professor, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Academician of the Russian Academy of Education Lemvel Valesyan was placed


 on the building of Journalists' Union of Armenia.
 
The memorial plague, co-authored by Sculptor Smbat Mkrtchyan, Architects Lusin Mamyan and Ashot Arshakyan, was unveiled by the academician’s son Ruben Valesyan and one of his relatives. 
 
The opening ceremony was attended by relatives and friends of Lemvel Valesyan, lecturer-professorial team of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) and prominent cultural figures.
 
  When representing the geographer, Head of the Chair of Economic Geography and its Teaching Methods at the Faculty of Biology, Chemistry and Geography Ashot Ajamoghlyan said, “It is too difficult to talk about a man, a scientist, who was one of the scientific giants of his time. Lemvel Valesyan is the author of numerous school textbooks and university books as well as geographical maps.”
 

 “A fervent patriot and state thinker, who made the Armenian geography known in Soviet times,” Professor of Yerevan State University, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor, President of the Geographical Union of Armenia Maxim Manasyan said in his opening remarks. “People say half joking, half seriously that the foundations of Armenia's economic independence were laid down by this scientist who fully devoted himself to Science, who helped many others form scientific outlook and strengthen their geographical knowledge,” he added. 
 
Academician Lemvel Valesyan lectured at Yerevan State University for many years. He headed a chair at the Institute of Economics of the Academy of Sciences of the Armenian SSR. 
 
From 1971 to 1977, Lemvel Valesyan headed the chair of Economic Geography and its Teaching Methods at Armenian State Pedagogical Institute after Khachatur Abovyan. On July 10, 1979, he was appointed rector of the same institute and held the position till 1987. 
 
 Lemvel Valesyan died in 2010 at the age of 81. In the last two years of his life, he lectured at the Pedagogical University.
