Distance Learning Students TakingFinal Exams at ASPU
21.06.2012

Students enrolled in distance education courses at Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) have been taking final state examinations since June 13.

Over 1250 students are participating in final certification exams in 34 specialties.

Vice-Chancellor for Distance and Additional Education, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Tigran Ayvazyan says there has been serious progress in the organization and conduct of examinations. Despite the complaints and appeals, the final grades have remained unchanged.

Ani Mnatsakanyan, a student of the Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, says all her fears and worries connected with the tense examination period are gone.

The student, who scored high marks in the exams, is satisfied with the examination process and the commission. She says the commission displayed objective and unbiased attitude towards students and was devoid of unnecessary rigor.

“My final paper was entitled “Teaching Methods of Microsoft Access Database Functions in Middle Schools.” After months of assiduous work I realized that the teaching methods of this software package are not only a must at the ASPU, but also in high schools,” she said.

Given the fact that the information the 8th and 9th grades pupils receive in middle schools is not sufficient to deepen their knowledge in high schools, Ani included in her laboratory works and tests such methodical approaches that will enable pupils to meet the criteria required for the reforms in the sphere.

Head of Digital Signal and Image Processing Laboratory, Institute for Informatics and Automation Problems, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Hakob Sarukhanyan is content with the examination results –excellent: 5, good: 1, satisfactory: 5, unsatisfactory: 1.

It is the first time Mr. Sarukhanyan has headed an examination commission at the ASPU. He disagrees with the widely-accepted belief that students studying in the distance learning system have poor knowledge. The professor believes that everything depends on a student’s desire and advises the students of the 21st century to frequently use self-improvement and self-help resources.

The Pedagogical University is already applying the order of final certification procedure confirmed by the RA Ministry of Education and Science according to which the whole examination process is recorded. It gives graduates an opportunity to appeal their grades within an hour after publicizing the results of exams.
