Sergey Adyan, an academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the Russian Federation and a noted specialist in Mathematical Logic and Theory of Algorithms, was in

Armenia on November 5-9. Head of the Department of Mathematical Logic of V.A. Steklov Institute of Mathematics visited Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) at the invitation of the University.
For two days in a row, ASPU lecturers and students had an opportunity to listen to the lectures of Sergey Adyan, who is also a professor at the Chair of Mathematical Logic of Lomonosov Moscow State University.
The meeting was organized by the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of the ASPU.
During the meetings, Mr Adyan referred to the current state of secondary and higher education in the RF and the ways of development.

The professor believes that the same problems exist in the education sector both in Armenia and Russia.
The academician does not approve of the testing system which came to replace exams. Also, he considers the Bologna process to be nothing but delusion.
“I am not familiarized with the system but I clearly see the confusion it has caused,” he said.
Touching upon the situation in secondary schools, Sergey Adyan emphasized the need to establish institutions that will train principals.
The academician says it is highly important to teach a child to think and differentiate between right and wrong before educating him.
Armenian specialists also participated in the discussion. Hamlet Mikaelyan, Acting Head of the Chair of Teaching Methodology of Mathematics, spoke about the problems

encountered in the education sector of Armenia since the proclamation of independence.
He expressed confidence that the free competition in the market of textbooks and the required concept will contribute to the free development of the sector.
“Personal interests should be subordinated to state interests. Let us not forget that in the past the sector of Applied Sciences was anchored on national values,” he said.
At the end of the meeting, Ara Yeremyan, ASPU Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs and Postgraduate Studies, Candidate of Legal Sciences and Associate Professor, handed over Sergey Adyan, the author of numerous scientific discoveries, a medal symbolizing the 90th anniversary of the University.

On the eve, the academician delivered a report on the Burnside problem. Adyan created the method in collaboration with his teacher – Academician P.S. Novikov: the method immediately secured the rapid progress of the Russian Mathematical Sciences in the group theory in the international arena.
According to a preliminary arrangement, Sergey Adyan will deliver lecturers for ASPU MA and PhD students in the course of next academic year.
Sergey Adyan founded and still heads one of the leading schools of Mathematics in Russia. He is the laureate of the RF State Prize, Moscow Mathematical Society, P. L. Chebyshev Prize of the USSR Academy of Sciences and Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Award. In 1975, Mr Adyan was awarded the Order of Labor Glory. He is a graduate of Yerevan Pedagogical Institute and Moscow Pedagogical Institute.
