New historiographical findings at international scientific conference

The scientific conference dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the establishment of Tbilisi Nersisyan School continues at the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU).

The second day of the international scientific conference under the title “The Tbilisi Nersisyan School and its Role in Academic Life in the Caucasus” featured speeches by representatives of various scientific-educational institutions of Armenia, Russia, Georgia and Hungary, including speeches that were given online.

The studies and research were presented, and what was particularly touched upon was the layout of art education at Nersisyan School, the educational issues at the outset of the 1890s and early 20th century, the remarkable figures of Tbilisi Nersisyan School and the activities of the printing house, the types of punishments at Eastern Armenian and Western Armenian educational institutions in the 19th century, etc.

Dean of the ASPU Faculty of History and Social Science (the event was held at the initiative of the Faculty) Edgar Hovhannisyan considers the event a success. Recapping the two-day scientific conference during a conversation with old.aspu.am, Hovhannisyan considered it remarkable in terms of the substantive and interesting speeches and discussions, adding that the fact that this was an international scientific conference helped ensure the active participation of representatives of foreign universities. “For us historians, the objective of every scientific conference is to not only address this or that event in a new way or put new facts about historical events into circulation, but also to ensure practice. The aim of the scientific conference dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the establishment of the Nersisyan School was to further develop and deepen the Armenian-Georgian relations in the scientific-educational format. For centuries, the two countries have had warm relations, but they need to be revalued anew from time to time. In the case of our Faculty, this was the first initiative, thanks to which the School in Tbilisi served as a unique bridge in terms of further deepening the Armenian-Georgian relations and the established connections and carrying out coordinated activities with the Georgian colleagues in the future,” he said.

Touching upon the substance of the speeches delivered, Associate Professor Edgar Hovhannisyan emphasized that they ensured new findings, adding that it is worth mentioning that in the past, rich people attached great importance to education, as well as made big investments and established excellence centers even back then.

Hovhannisyan added that all this attests to the fact that, being a nation with very small resources, we need to gear the main investment towards the creation of advanced models of education. “If we succeed, we will have educational institutions of importance in the region, like the Lazarian Lyceum and Nersisyan School were in the past,” he said.

Edgar Hovhannisyan voiced hope that the anthology of materials of the international scientific conference will also serve its goal from the perspective of research on Nersisyan School and Armenian education.

Certificates were granted to the participants of the international scientific conference entitled “Tbilisi Nersisyan School and its Role in Academic Life in the Caucasus”.
