The Republican Conference headed “Issues of Teaching Social Sciences at Universities and School” was launched at the Pedagogical; all parties interested and concerned in the subject, such as school headmasters, teachers, lecturers and students participated in the conference.
In his keynote address the Dean of the Faculty of History and Law Edgar Hovhannisyan informs that from the academic year 2016-2017 specialisation in “Social Sciences” will be introduced at the Pedagogical University. Based on the RA Ministry of ES strategy and secondary schools’ academic programme, with the direct participation of the Faculty’s Deputy Dean for Science and Postgraduate Studies Hayk Grigoryan the university curriculum was drafted.
The Dean expressed his hope that the issues raised by the specialists regarding the subject will stimulate the introduction and effectiveness of the specialisation.
Further on, the Deputy Minister of ES Manuk Mkrtchyan considered the organization of identifying the nature, essence and understanding of the subject as the main aim of the conference assuring that the conference was the best platform to get acquainted with one another’s ideas, having a mutual influence.
“Social Sciences are a new discipline for the newly independent Armenia, a new phenomenon which implies consequences deriving from the subject and there are no methodological grounds. From the perspective of value system, it is very important to make the study and identification -formation of issues of social sciences to find out what we are supposed to do next”, mentioned the Deputy Minister and added that the study of the subject would allow them to understand certain patterns of social life as well.
Further on the ASPU Vice-Rector for Education Srbouhi Gevorgyan expressed her hope that the Conference would discuss controversial issues not only about teaching the subject but also about numerous conflicts raising phenomenon existing in the society.
Moreover, in her opinion Social Sciences are the field of science that requires a complex approach of several sciences at the same time including psychology, political sciences, legal sciences; in their turn, practitioners and theorists are concerned about those values as the transforming society requires new approaches.
Afterwards, the Executive Director of the “Armenian Center for Democratic Education – CIVITAS” NGO Alexander Shagafyan spoke about the activities of the project implemented with the support of the UN since 2014 mentioning that during that period the emphasis was laid on the sphere of education, particularly on the joint initiative of introducing the new specialisation in “Social Sciences” at the Pedagogical University.
“The results of our work are the development of a specialized course; the ASPU did all that was possible and today we are expecting for the introduction of the course with the readiness to further support its fulfillment”.
The conference continued with presentation of reports during which the issues of teaching Social Sciences at universities and schools of Armenia were discussed, more effective methods were suggested. Later on, the specialists expressed their desire to advance cooperation among institutions interested in the subject, teachers and persons concerned therewith.
Last but not least, within the framework of the project “Democracy and Human Rights Education in Armenian” and with the support of the UN Democracy Foundation the “Armenian Center for Democratic Education – CIVITAS” NGO printed the scientific digest of the Republican Conference material approved by the Board of the ASPU Faculty of History and Law.
