Olympiad winners announced

The results of an Olympiad on the History of Armenia held at the initiative of the Faculty of History and Law were summed up at Armenian State Pedagogical University today.

Overall, 54 pupils of eleventh and twelfth forms from 20 schools in Yerevan participated in the two-stage competition. The questions were drawn from textbooks and answers were marked with maximum objectivity.

“The aim of the Olympiad was to deepen interest in the subject and help participants gain additional experience, thinking and analytical skills. The fight was really tense. We can say that the subject is in safe hands, and teachers perform their duties at the highest possible level,” Edgar Hovhannisyan, Dean of the Faculty of History and Law said when congratulating the participants. He stressed that intellect is a priority in the 21st century and it leads to success in all areas of life.

Mr Hovhannisyan added that the profound knowledge of the subject and the participation in the Olympiad would also help ease the burden of parents. If the participants choose to continue their studies at the Pedagogical University, the third prize winner will get a 30 percent tuition discount. The second and first prize winners will get 40% and 50% off the cost of their tuition, respectively. Let us note that a 10 percent tuition discount is also foreseen for the schoolchildren who passed the first stage of the Olympiad.

Ashot Piliposyan, Head of the Department of Armenian History, also congratulated the participants saying the initiative was important for him. He stressed that one can be aware of everything but the ignorance of one’s history is ‘an undesirable luxury’ for a small nation like ours.

The historian expressed hope that he would soon communicate with the Olympiad participants in the ASPU building as their lecturer and assured them that ‘the high qualified staff of the University is ready to give fundamental knowledge to them.’ “Our people are going to eternity and has a brilliant future,” he added.

Talking to old.aspu.am, first prize holders of the Olympiad, Tatevik Arshakyan, a pupil of the ASPU Base (High School) College, and Hasmik Ghzmajyan, a pupil of School №189, said the Olympiad also helped them in the choice of their future professions.  Both of them are going to enter Armenian State Pedagogical University and continue their studies in the Faculty of History and Law.

The participants of the Olympiad also visited the ASPU Museum, got acquainted with the University’s activities, and watched a film about the University.

At the end of the event, the participants received “Certificates of Participation.”
