Petros Hoktanyan: I talk to my readers

"He writes the way he lives, he writes about what makes [people] live. The poet's world is filled with the sweet emotion of love, traditional and modern perception of the song of the Motherland, thoughtful and philosophical formulations. His poetry born from sincerity cleans the human soul, making it crystal clear and flawless. It is free from convulsions and brings fresh and healthy thinking and a noble fidelity matching true literature," Associate Professor Naira Khachatryan said when describing Petros Hoktanyan’s poetry.

On May 7, the young writer, who graduated from the Faculty of Culture of ASPU, visited his Alma Mater.

Naira Khachatryan says time is constantly moving in Hoktanyan’s poetry; his poetry is not material, it is written in the language of the soul, which as the writer describes is “poetry with the body removed.”

Petros Hoktanyan has written two books - "Casino" and "After Us". His third book will be published soon.

The students participating in the meeting said that Hoktanyan's poems filled with emotions, moving and expressive descriptions captivate readers like a magic wand and fill them with magical melody.

They confess that meetings with sincere and honest people are long-awaited. Petros Hoktanyan is one of a kind; every line he writes conveys a bunch of emotions and feelings to readers.

The meeting with professors and students of the Faculty of Philology was held in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The author's love, patriotic and philosophical poems were presented, and the attendees had an opportunity to see the world from Petros Hoktanyan’s perspective.

When asked what is easier – to turn colours into words or to get colours from words, the poet, who is an artist pedagogue by profession, said after graduation there was a period when he started painting with words. He has been painting for about 15 years, but poetry and theater are closer to his heart.

During the meeting, Petros Hoktanyan also spoke about his favourite classical writers, their influence and inspiration, and modern poetry.

The poet says today we have many talented writers from whom it is possible to learn. In his poetry, he presents everything clearly so that everyone can understand what he wants to say. Although he writes prose too, he prefers verse.

When writing something Petros Hoktanyan does not try to prove anything; the writer should write for himself, it is a cry of the soul. "Poetry is like prayer for me. “I don't write sentences, I don't search for words, they are born inside me, get polished and publicized. The reader chooses the writer he prefers, and the writer has his own readers. I talk to readers, but I don't need to prove anything."

By the way, Hoktanyan is also a songwriter and has written lyrics to a number of songs. The Faculty of Philology also hosted singer Srbuhi Simonyan who performed several songs written by Hoktanyan.

Dean of the Faculty of Philology Ashot Galstyan said the meeting was a unique opportunity [for him] to go back to the experiences of his student years; back then, meetings with distinguished figures of the sphere were teaching and inspiring.

Ashot Galstyan believes that the Faculty of Philology is of strategic importance: the Faculty trains and prepares teachers of Armenian language and literature who are to pass on the Mesopian alphabet to generations.

He says in the world where there is a crisis in education, the primary task of their students should be to read books, be literate and polite.

Petros Hoktanyan adds a pedagogue is an educator and teacher, who should be an example for others. He advised everyone to be and remain an Armenian, irrespective of their occupation. weapons alone do not win wars; knowledge and education can bring victories.

"It is too difficult to please the Armenian nation that has had so many talented writers, but Petros Hoktanyan managed to impress both capricious young people like us and the older generation," the students of the Faculty of Philology said at the end of the meeting.
