Professor Poghos Simonyan passes away

Doctor of History, Professor Poghos Simonyan has passed away. He was 87 years old.

Born on April 10, 1937, Poghos Simonyan graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology at the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) and taught history and literature at various schools in Armenia.

Since 1970, he worked as Head of Education Department at the Armenian State Pedagogical Institute and taught as a Senior Lecturer at the same time.
Between 1988 and 2006, he held the position of Dean of the ASPU Faculty of History and Geography.

Poghos Simonyan lectured at his alma mater for many years and transmitted his perennial and professional knowledge and experience to several generations of historians.

Poghos Simonyan had great merit in pedagogy and historical science. Starting from the 1970s, he not only lectured, but was also actively involved in science.

The axis of his interests was the Armenian Question in the 1890s and Russian public thinking. He also touched upon the Hamidian massacres, the migration of Western Armenians to Russia, the responses to the Armenian massacres in Russian presses and Russian public thinking in regard to the Armenian Question.

The death of Poghos Simonyan is a great loss for the scientific community and those who knew him. He always enjoyed the love and respect of professors and his colleagues.

The professors and lecturers of the Armenian State Pedagogical University express their condolences to the family of Poghos Simonyan. His memory will remain alive in the hearts of his colleagues and those who knew him.

The Memorial Service for Poghos Simonyan will be held on January 16th (17:00-20:00) at “Yedem” funeral parlor (address: Khachik Dashtents Street, building #68/1).
