Speech Therapists of the Neurological Hospital of Lyon Visit the Pedagogical University

From 10- 14 October, the speech logopaedists of the Neurological Hospital of Lyon, France, are delivering lectures on the topic of “Speech Therapy in Neurorehabilitation System” at the ASPU.

Aphasia, aphasia-dysphasia, dysphasia, amyotrophic sclerosis, amyotrophic and multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease; during their first visit to the University organized within the scope of the course planned in the curriculum of the 1st year MA students of “Logopaedics”, logopaedists Astghik Topuzyan (Armenian) and Lorianne Blanché (French) shared their practical experience and novelties of the sphere with beginners and already experienced professionals.

The specialist from France, who in addition to practice, also have rich lecturing experience, expressed a positive opinion about the organized lectures looking forward to having continuous cooperation, and expecting for the presented material to be useful for students, the University as well as the Armenian patients.

“It is known that logopaedists work both at secondary educational and medical establishments. In Armenia, Logopaedics is more developed in the academic sphere, while there are still activities to be done in the clinical sector; there is an obvious need of involving more specialists. Being familiar with the specialists of leading hospitals in France, we decided to invite them to the Pedagogical University, to introduce the speech disorder conditioned with organic brain lesion”, the Head of the Chair of Logopaedics and Rehabilitation Therapy, Associate Professor Jeanna Paylozyan mentioned in her interview to the old.aspu.am.

The latter considered as one of the main novelties that the presented material broke the traditional stereotype that logopaedists cannot or do very little in case of speech disorder.

Likewise, Jeanna Paylozyan mentioned that during the lectures the foreign guests introduced their work highlighting that speech disorder should be considered as a communication disfunction, and even in case of heavy illnesses the patients should be accompanied thus ensuring their communication bot by verbal or non-verbal means.
What is more, in their interview with the old.aspu.am the students also expressed positive opinions, highlighting the exchange of experience, the working style of foreign specialists and the applied methods.

“These meetings are mutually beneficial, serve as a good opportunity to compare, to share experience with one another, to get acquainted with the differences in tests and in researches, as well as to get assured that in the learning process we are walking in line with the time”, the MA student Yana Karapetyan mentioned during her conversation with the old.aspu.am and added that the lectures were of a more practical nature supplementing to the theoretical knowledge.

To conclude, the lectures were summarized with active discussions, questions and answers, also with the involvement of specialist from other institutions.
