The famous Armenian poet, literary critic, and translator Paruyr Sevak was born 100 years ago. On the occasion of the writer’s 100th anniversary, the Chair of New and Modern Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods of Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU) recently organized a student scientific conference at the Paruyr Sevak House-Museum. The event was held with a number of scientific and educational institutions of the country before the big scientific conference due in November.
Together with Suren Danielyan, Head of the Chair of New and Modern Armenian Literature and its Teaching Methods and Director of the Spyurk (Diaspora) Scientific-Educational Center, lecturers and students of ASPU and Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory visited Sevak's birthplace, Zangakatun, to lay flowers in memory of the writer. On the way they stopped by the memorial stone placed near the site of the accident (Sevak was killed in a car accident).
In his opening remarks, Sevak Ghazaryan, Director of the Paruyr Sevak House-Museum, said scientific approaches are extremely important among the numerous events marking the writer’s 100th birth anniversary. “Sevak's poetry still has many undiscovered aspects. It is important that students are also involved in these activities. It is also important that you discover Sevak in a new way, right under Sevak's roof, in his house, where we always feel the poet's presence," Sevak Ghazaryan said.
ASPU students Arevik Gomtsyan, Tatev Tamrazyan, Anush Kirakosyan and Anna Kyureghyan presented interesting reports on some of the writer’s works, including “Man in a Palm,” "Paruyr Sevak's Literary "Entry", “Ode to Armenian Language in Sevak’s works.”
They revealed the uniqueness of Sevak's poetry for themselves and those present in a new way, stressing the poet’s significant and innovative role in Armenian literature – a poet who declared himself the "legislator of poetry".
It is well known that a number of songs are based on Sevak’s poems. During the event, Tigran Shahinyan and Ani Sargsyan, both MA students of Komitas State Conservatory, performed "Erebuni-Yerevan" and "Sardarapat", as well as Gusan Shahen's "Antsa Gnatsi" song dedicated to the writer.
The visitors were welcomed by Associate Professor Tsovinar Movsisyan, a co-organizer of the event, Vice-Rector for Scientific Affairs at Komitas State Conservatory. She then spoke about the creative relationship between Paruyr Sevak and Edgar Hovhannisyan.
Tsovinar Movsisyan remembered the day when she first stepped into the Sevak House-Museum accompanied by her beloved lecturer, connoisseur of spiritual music Khoren Palian. She stressed that meetings of that format are not only educational, but also impressive and unforgettable.
“The Paruyr Sevak House-Museum belongs to everyone. It is first of all a house of poetry, where the ‘immortal’ poet continues ‘to command’ and unite generations," Professor Suren Danielyan said and thanked Sevak Ghazaryan for the warm welcome.
Professor Danielyan also spoke about Paruyr Sevak as a poet, who not only declared poetry as a literary creed, but also became the artist who opened furrows in the wilderness of Armenian literature, started a fight against "empty and creaky" words and heralded the time of "true poetry".
"Love for Sevak prevents us from approaching his studies," the professor said, and, addressing the future pedagogues, added that epistemology is the only way to understand Sevak’s poetry, hence we should use it in studying Sevak’s poetry.
