Studios after Ghukas Chubaryan and Souren Safaryan

Today, two workshop studios of the ASPU Faculty of Art Education were named after People’s Artists of Armenia, Professors Ghukas Chubaryan and Souren Safaryan. From now on, studios 200 and 204 will be unique places for future painters to get equipped with highly professional knowledge and skills, and which are decorated by their best pieces.

The Acting Rector of the Pedagogical University Srbouhi Gevorgyan highlighted the organisation of such an initiative on the 100th anniversary of the University, which allowed to once again value the outstanding figures, great artists and masters of the University.

“These persons’ names are long known to wider scope of people from pedagogical, educational, and professional perspectives. Having studios named after Ghukas Chubaryan and Souren Safaryan will allow to get into a special kind of dialogue with them, to follow the advice of great masters and to be the bearer of their values”, mentioned Srbouhi Gevorgyan.

Besides, she referred to Ghukas Chubaryan’s and Souren Safaryan’s many years of practice as the Heads of the Chair of Drawing and Chair of Painting, correspondingly, and was happy to notice that the generations of artists trained by them had till now linked their professional aspirations with this university.

“By praising the teachers, we praise the presence, and form the future”, mentioned the Acting Rector of the APSU and particularly congratulated the students, who will be developing their professional qualities at these studio workshops named after the artists well-known both in their homeland and beyond its borders.

The People’s Artist of Armenia Paravon Mirzoyan, who had also been teaching at the Pedagogical University for many years, remembers his meeting with the outstanding artists back in the days; still half a century ago Ghukas Chubaryan was accompanying a young painter Suren Safaryan to teach at the Institute of Theatre, and Souren Safaryan in his turn was happy to welcome him at the Artists Union of Armenia.

“He is great, who is able to help a younger person, and who will then, in his turn, help another young person. In that sense, we should all be following the example of the Pedagogical University to educate generations. We all know what the 100 years of the Pedagogical University have given to our people”, added Paravon Mirzoyan.

Famous painters, guests, and art lovers were also present at the opening of the studios.

The President of the Artists Union of Armenia Souren Safaryan also attended this event, but for one more reason, as well; he is the grandson of painter Suren Safaryan. He expressed his gratefulness for such an appraisal of his grandfather and added, “Souren Safaryan’s name is again called at this University. I would love to see students worthy of his name to be trained and toughed at this studio throughout many years”. Furthermore, Souren Safaryan presented ten easels to the workshop studio named after his grandfather.

Next, during the event organised on the 100th anniversary of the University, a joint piece of art work by 15 lecturers of the Faculty of Art Education was displayed; each of them drew mountain Ararat on that canvas according to their imagination, using their typical brush colours, and creative approach.

Last but not least, the Dean of the Faculty of Art Education Ara Hakobyan thanked the guests and added that within the framework of a century’s anniversary of the University, an exhibition of works by the teaching staff of the Faculty was planned. Ara Hakobyan also assured that the exhibition would once again prove that they were indeed the true sons of Ghukas Chubaryan and Souren Safaryan.
