Tertiary Academic Degree is a Necessity

The Pedagogical University hosted the presentation ceremony of an educational and methodological guideline headed “Doctorate degree: fundamentals of organizing tertiary higher education” co-authored by Sergo Yeritsyan, Armen Tchuxuryan and Atom Mkhitaryan.

The guidelines were approved for publication by the decision of the ASPU Academic Board. The authors of the work introduced the western countries’ practice in postgraduate education drawing parallels between the PhD and Doctorate degrees. According to the co-authors, the transmission from the PhD degree to Doctorate is already a necessity; as a matter of fact, there are essential differences between the PhD and Doctorate educational levels.

The ASPU Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs Srbouhi Gevorgyan congratulated the co-authors on the presentation on behalf of the University’s Management, and assured that the fundamentals of organizing Doctorate degree education were included in the guidelines together with sufficient information to get the overall understanding of the process.

“Looks like, we have skipped the third level of education and do not risk stepping into that area. Firmly sticking to our mentality and keeping the former system do not allow us to easily take up reforms and to achieve tangible success in this sphere”, mentioned the co-author of the book, Professor Sergo Yeritsyan and added that in the process of compiling the guidelines they were guided by the principles of open speech, diversity, and pluralism.

In the latter’s opinion changes in Doctorate level should be addressed and targeted, but not slow, while the guidelines would help the be beginning Doctorate students to obtain new level of self-management, to prevent the risks of failing Doctorate education, to be creative and interested to be able to achieve desired results.

“Doctorate degree serves not just for science, but for its development”, mentioned one of the co-authors of the guidelines Armen Tchughuryan and introduced the formation of Doctorate degree education, the significance and objectives of adopting the system among us.

In his turn, the co-author Atom Mkhitaryan spoke about the key motives that fostered them to write the guidelines, including the RA Government programme, science, integration of education, production and innovation. He outlined that in the Armenian science field this area had not been studied well, and that there were no common criteria to organize third level of education.

Starting from the admissions procedure, up to the process of awarding the degree and writing the dissertation, forms of organizing the doctoral research, etc.; Atom Mkhitaryan assures that the guidelines will have their practical contribution to the improvement of Doctorate students’ organizational behavior and will guide the graduates in a timely and due manner in their desired and competitive achievement of academic results.

The Head of the Pedagogical University’s Research Centre Kamo Vardanyan was glad to notice that finally the guidelines were issued, and that they could guide the process of organizing academic activities.

“Until now, in Armenian reality these processes were guided by various scientific methodological manuals widespread in the Russian scientific world. There are still numerous unsolved questions in science the answers to which we expect to get from similar manuals”, mentioned Kamo Vardanyan and highlighted several values in the book from the perspective of equivalence of different levels.

We would also like to mention that the guidelines are really useful for students studying on the third level of their professional education as it explains how to publish a scientific article, effectively participate in conferences, formulate the research novelty, writing skills, etc.

And last but not least, the guests of the presentation were also welcomed by the “Nairyan” vocal band.
