“There is Art in Photographs”

Today, the Pedagogical University’s Faculty of Culture organized a photo exhibition of 1st and 2nd years Cinematography students of the Faculty of Culture.

he students supervised by the lecturer of the Department of Cinematography, Artistic Photography and Socio-Cultural Activities Shavarsh Vardanyan exhibited around 200 multi-genre works such as scenery, still life, portrait, genre photos.

The selection was made by the course leader, who studied both the principles of Cinematography learned within a short period and the successful skills applied by the students in their works, as well as some of their successful photos made in the past.

“First and foremost I took into consideration the whole idea inside the shot, its correct compositional setting, selection of light, optics and how they see everything. The photographers are beginners and not yet experienced, the selection was not strict as they still have a lot to learn”, mentioned Shavarsh Vardanyan adding that it would be preferable to see genre photos prevailing among the exhibits and more of work with the artificial light; contrary to the photos made in nature, studio photography requires more skills.

Moreover, Shavarsh Vardanyan expressed his hope that the Faculty would soon have a technically equipped studio which would help students to practice their knowledge obtained in the learning process; likewise, he added that during the initial years students are taught the correct art of photography, after which it comes to perceiving the motion of shot.

The second year student Vahe Nersisyan, who was participating in such an event for the first time, presented around 14 works at the exhibition. It is hard for him to single a photo out of all his works, however, he does not hide that he has his favourite ones, too.

Besides, he mentioned a few difficulties he had faced noticing that it was particularly hard to find the personal standpoint of the given object and to figure out shots which had not been made before.

More to the point, emphasizing the importance of higher education, Vahe stressed out that the University and the Professionals employed therein gave him the knowledge that would open all doors to the mysteries of the world of the photography.

Furtheron, the Head of the Department of Cinematography, Artistic Photography and Socio-Cultural Activities Rouben Yerznkyan drew the attention to the exhibitions that were regularly organized at the Faculty, and confessed that despite the misbelief in the very beginning that one differed a lot as it did not have an exact theme, and the participants were all future cinematographers. Additionally, the Head of the Department considered the exhibition as a way of unique motivation that would support the formation of students’ thinking and development of their imagination.

In his turn, the Dean of the Faculty frankly mentioned that the art of photography was his favourite and that he paid a great deal of attention to it.

“This exhibition astonished me with its high professionalism and interesting photos; I stood in front of each and every photo and had a look; each of them was unique with its history and life; they are all full of art.”

And last but not least, among those present at the photo exhibition was Zaven Sargsyan- the Director of the house –museum of Sergey Paradjanov; he is also a lecturer at the Pedagogical University.  During his interview to the old.aspu.am the honored art figure mentioned that despite some shortcomings there was no lack of interesting pieces. It was very peculiar that different people perceived one and the same object in different ways. The latter also expressed hope that the talented students that participated in the exhibition would continue with their professional education to the Master’s degree where they are so much needed.
