Tumanyan’s works are a dialogue with the entire world

“Tumanyan is unique, Tumanyan is great, Tumanyan is in each of us,” ASPU Rector Ruben Mirzakhanyan said during an international conference dedicated to the great Armenian writer. The conference dedicated to the great Armenian writer Hovhannes Tumanyan was organized jointly by ASPU and Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas.

Once again appreciating the musical compositions written based on the lyrics of the poet's works, Mr. Mirzakhanyan particularly stressed the importance of the operas. He expressed hope that the conservatory students will continue the good traditions and in their new musical pieces will touch upon the unique pages of the writer's poetry.

Narine Tukhikyan, the former director of Hovhannes Tumanyan Museum, thanked the organizers of the conference and informed Tumanyan’s fans that they are going to release a CD of romances based on the writer’s works. Tukhikyan underlined that all the spheres of Tumanyan's activity are equally important and we should look for the writer’s wholeness in his works. “For me, Tumanyan's mission was to lead people to humanization and his greatest strength was in his freedom. We should follow him to the fathomlessness, to the height,” she said advising everyone to fly at great heights like Tumanyan and stand firm on our land.

Eduard Militonyan, Chairman of the Writers' Union of Armenia, referred to the historical and political period when the writer became a great phenomenon. “Tumanyan is unique in literature with his collective image. He expanded our perception of language, which was later continued by Vahan Teryan,” he said. Mr. Militonyan also spoke about Tumanyan’s ideas, particularly his call to return to people what was taken from them and to introduce in poetry folk and colloquial elements, as well as Tumanyan’s activity as a translator, literary and public activist. “We should know the path that Tumanyan showed us in order to form our identity, be grateful to Tumanyan and get to know ourselves through him.”
Suren Danielyan, Head of the Chair of New and Modern Armenian Literature at ASPU, said throughout his activity Hovhannes Tumanyan had a dialogue not only with his nation but also with the whole world.

“Tumanyan has always been with the Armenian nation like the wise people of the East. We still have to learn to look at the world from the height of the poet. Tumanyan's works are a dialogue with time, Man and God,” said Mr. Danielyan. He added that Anush is a national love poem through which the writer perfected the genre of poetry.

In her report Tsovinar Movsisyan, Vice-Rector of Yerevan State Conservatory, presented the writer ‘in music’ focusing on the musical patterns composed based on the lyrics of Hovhannes Tumanyan. In particular, she referred to Almast and said it’s an inexhaustible material for study.

Ruben Asatryan, Dean of the Vocal-Theoretical Faculty of Yerevan State Conservatory, also spoke about the musical conpositions written on the basis of Tumanyan’s works. In particular, he singled out Anush by Armen Tigranyan and said that today we would have something tasteless if the melody of the poem was not correctly revealed. “Anush is a powerful work which is one of the perfect examples of classical art and greatest operas in the world.

Garuna Yeranosyan, and Narek Margaryan recited poems by Tumanyan, while students of the Yerevan State Conservatory staged an extract from “Anush” opera which was directed by Arsen Ghazaryan.

The international conference will continue on May 4 and 5 in the writer’s house-museum in Dsegh village (In Lori marz, Armenia) and in Tbilisi (Georgia).
