Within the framework of cooperation between the Chair of Pedagogy, ASPU, and DVV International in Armenia, presentation and discussion of the report of UNESCO’s International Commission on the Futures of Education on new social contract for education was held on November 3.
ASPU Rector Srbuhi Gevorgyan emphasized partnership with the organization [DVV International], noting that a number of joint programmes implemented in the field of education have already produced tangible results. She congratulated DVV International on the occasion of the 20th anniversary, hailing the huge work the organization has carried out to solve issues of public concern.
Ester Hakobyan, Director of the DVV International Armenia Country Office, notes that both institutions have come a long way in terms of experience in the field of education. She hailed the quality of cooperation with ASPU.
Speaking about the quality of education in the world, access to education and changes in different learning platforms, Ester Hakobyan said those changes should be achieved through progressive steps. “With the help of this programme, UNESCO has tried to understand what is changing in the world, how to form an educational system, where equality, human rights, and the quality of education will be ensured,” she said.
During the meeting, Ester Hakobyan summarized the results of an essay competition entitled "Perspectives on the Future of Education" and gave presents to the ASPU students Elen Avetisyan, Arus Ayvazyan and Anna Harutyunyan.
Misha Tadevosyan, a lecturer at ASPU, Education Programme Coordinator at DVV International Armenia, also stressed the importance of the cooperation between the two institutions in question. He says regardless of one’s field of activity, one should make investments and give back to the university the benefits that he once received. "With their content and perspectives the programmes speak to that," he said.
Serob Khachatryan, a specialist in education, presented the main provisions of the report "Rethinking the Perspectives of Our Joint Future: A New Social Contract for Education.”
In his report “Education as a Human Right and Public Good” the speaker presented the main issues of the programme and focused on new pedagogy. “We should reject the pedagogical models, lessons and assessment methods that emphasize individualistic and competitive forms of progress, we shoud reformulate pedagogy as a collaborative profession,” Mr. Khachatryan said adding that pedagogy is a relationship, a social art; both teachers and learners are transformed during the pedagogical contact, as they learn from each other.
Speaking about evaluation of teachers, Serob Khachatryan said technologies cannot replace the human teachers: technology can do nothing if there is no good pedagogy.
At the end of the meeting, Professor Aida Topuzyan, Head of the Chair of Pedagogy, spoke about the perspectives of pedagogical education until 2030.
In order to reaffirm the mission of the Pedagogical University, the professor stressed the need to develop effective teaching strategies to ensure connection with preschool, primary and secondary education.
The professor says a modern pedagogical university should ensure continuous relationship between teachers and higher professional education, and an ASPU graduate should also be evaluated as a person who carries out social activity and contributes to the development of his profession.
Aida Topuzyan considers training and preparation of a reflexive person to be one of the important peculiarities of a modern pedagogical university. She also stresses importance of digital literacy of future teachers and teaching staff. “Serious changes should be made in the organization of teaching profession, including in the policy of preparing and selecting teachers, and regulating their career path,” she said.
