On May 5, “Olympiad in Sociology: 2023” was held at the initiative of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work, Faculty of Education and Psychology.
The participants were 2nd and 3rd year students majoring in Sociology. The objective was to check and test the participants’ professional skills and abilities in the field, to strengthen their knowledge and cooperation.
Stressing the importance of the event Dean of the Faculty Ruzanna Petrosyan said that Sociology as a science has its tasks, place and role in the world: thanks to this very profession it is possible to give correct assessments.
She noted with regret that in today's digital world, many do not speak about the significant role of Sociology, while in fact it has its place and role, and the Olympiad is a good opportunity to delve deeper into the profession, to test, deepen and broaden students’ knowledge of the subject.
Gayane Khachikyan, Head of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work, wished the participants to have active discussions and effective competition and fully demonstrate their skills and knowledge.
The Olympiad was held in three stages. Two of the teams - "The Unknowns" and "Social Doctors" considered the event to be demonstration of knowledge. As a result of a tense competition "Social Doctors" was named winner with a score of 8/9.
When asked about their name, "Social Doctors" said according to the widespread opinion, they are considered "doctors of society" who identify problems, determine their nature and offer solutions to them.
The "Unknowns" expressed hope that such events will further emphasize the importance of science and make it popular.
At the end of the event, Suzanna Yeghiazaryan, a lecturer of the Chair of Sociology and Social Work and one of the organizers of the Olympiad, congratulated the participants, handed over the prize to the winners, and gave books and concert tickets to encourage the others.
