“Who Created Istanbul”

On the International Museums Day an exhibition headed “Who Created Istanbul” was organized at the ASPU Museum during which those present had the opportunity to get familiar with constructions authored by Armenian architects, particularly the Palyans; it is still possible to see the constructions in the capital city of Turkey.

Public institutions, mosques and palaces that have been authored by the Palyans, who managed to combine various European styles with the Eastern luxury.

The ASPU Head of the Department of History of Armenia, Professor Ashot Piliposyan assured that even though Turkish officials often maneuver and distort historical facts, still there are a lot of documents about it.

“The issue is that several decades later these people, who created the image of the capital city, were massacred by the owners of those luxurious buildings. Future pedagogues in particular must pass to the generations that historical and cultural heritage is a fact showing where we came from, what type we were and who are currently trying to own them.”

In addition, the professor assured that the same is relevant in case of history of architecture of Baku; he also promised to demonstrate the buildings of that city, which were in fact the outcomes of the mind and talent of Armenian architects in near future.

The initiator of the event, the Lecturer of the Chair of History of Armenia Susanna Khachatryan, in her turn, added that the aim is not to emphasize the Armenian ethnic background of the authors, but to show that fifty-six buildings of the nineteenth century are still stable and continue to ravish everybody with their luxury and mastery.

Among those present at the exhibition was the teaching professorial team of the University, the students, other guests including the pupils of the secondary school N1 after Mesrop Mashtots from Sevan. Likewise, they had the chance to also see the exhibitions dedicated to the 25th Independence anniversary and the Artsakh wars. Here facts, photos, belongings kept in funds of the University’s lecturers and graduates having participated in the war were exhibited.

The Director of the Museum Alvard Grigoryan stated in her interview to the old.aspu.am that with such exhibitions the students are listing another heroic page of their University, and the visitors are enriching themselves with new knowledge about the talented sons of the Armenians nation.
On this occasion, within the scope of the International Museums Day Alvard Grigoryan also referred to the ASPU museum’s activities assuring that it is the most active within the university system.

“The availability of a professional Chair contributes to the Museum becoming an academic and a methodological center for students with the possibility to use the results in various museums of Armenia,” the Director mentioned and added that a lot of programmes had been implemented in that direction.

We would also like to mention that the exhibition will last until 21 May. On that day the ASPU Museum, too, will the participate in the “Museum Night” with its number of events.
