Who is a hero?

Who is a hero?

…And an order was given
To protect our borders and liberate our occupied lands,
Forward rushed our young soldier
With a letter in his pocket,
Standing on the border with the enemy
He dreamed to die a hero’s death.
No, I have not chosen a sad epilogue to my story,
Sitting beside his mother he is enjoying his life,
Holding his child in his arms,
He is pondering over the days of the past…

Nare Yenokyan, a first-year student of the Faculty of Foreign Languages, wrote this poem during the April war in 2016 but she has not had an opportunity to present it to the public.

An event dedicated to women and mothers was organized at the ASPU upon the initiative of the Faculty and teaching staff of the Chair of Germanic Languages. The event was attended by Anahit Gasparyan and her son Hayk Torosyan, who was seriously wounded in the four-day war in Karabakh.

During the matinee, the future teachers spoke about the importance of women's role and presented facts about women who had measurable gains in numerous historical realities. The students also presented the achievements of women in areas where only men had success in the past.

They stressed that women's most important mission is that of being mothers. At the same time, they assured everyone that along with their beauty, delicacy, sensitivity, intelligence and other qualities women should also demonstrate heroism: the act of soldiers’ mothers is a brilliant evidence of it.

Who is a hero -the son, who defends his Motherland at the cost of his life, or his mother? The attendees gave the same reply saying both of them deserve equal respect and gratitude.

Hayk’s mother was excited and pleasantly surprised. The present-day young people convey a sense of energy and strength with their words and deeds, create opportunities to be proud of them and he, the hero, is as proud and confident today as he was on that day when he was protecting our border. Hayk Torosyan is already a student. During the meeting, the future sociologist talked to students, answered their questions and shared with them the memories of those days.

Head of the Chair of Germanic Languages, Elena Mkhitaryan, thanked everyone for the hospitality and Anahit Gasparyan for 'giving such a hero to the nation.' She gave Hayk a textbook written by her and expressed hope that the book would improve his knowledge and skills as well as the level of language proficiency.

Participating in the event was also Varsenik Hovhannisyan who assists the families of wounded soldiers. For many years she has helped soldiers and their families with the understanding that an Armenian soldier who protects his Homeland at the cost of his health and life should be encouraged with words and actions. She says such events are useful and important in the sense that they provide an opportunity for students to get in touch with heroes, understand and appreciate the price of freedom of Motherland, while heroes are pleased to be appreciated and leave knowing that they will not be forgotten.
