Workshops on Disaster Risk Reduction

A training course organized within the framework of the program “Mainstreaming Disaster Risk Reduction in ASPU Curriculum” implemented jointly by ASPU and UNICEF Armenia has kicked off at the Pedagogical University. A total of 150 lecturers from different faculties of the University are participating in the training.

During the training, different experts will present the characteristics of natural disasters, global environmental problems in the context of sustainable development, psychological aspects of Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), formation of DRR culture, etc.

“Natural disasters are becoming more frequent in the world, while their risks are decreasing conditioned by the nature of disasters, human and other factors.  This training on Disaster Risk Reduction was urgent and topical, given the fact that DRR components will soon be introduced in the curricula,” said Ara Yeremyan, ASPU Vice-Rector for Personnel and International Cooperation. He added that under the programs of the RA Ministry of Education and Science, methodological manuals on disaster risk reduction will be created for educators who will use them at work.

Hakob Grigoryan, Head of the Department of First Aid, Emergency Situations and Civil Protection, spoke about organization and administration of first aid during emergencies and strengthening of DRR capacities in the ASPU curriculum.

The expert stressed once again that Armenia is situated in a high-risk zone and is prone to various hazards and everyone should be prepared to face different types of disasters.

Talking to old.aspu.am, Mr Grigoryan said ASPU was the first university in Armenia to organize training on DRR which is expected to involve more professors in the future.
