PSYCHOLOGY OF PERSONS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS

This course provides brief understanding on the psychological specifications of persons with special needs, including intellectual and developmental disabilities, sensory and physical disorders, etc. The course discusses the historical approaches to disability and their reflections onto the current societal attitudes to disabilities, the theoretical foundations explaining the psychology of people with special needs: ecological model, neuropsychological model, cognitive model, L.S.Vigotsly’s social-development, zone of proximal development theories, the application of these theories in  education and psychological support to persons with special needs. The course also covers study of the psychological peculiarities of the following conditions: -intellectual and developmental disabilities, - autistic spectrum disorders, - hearing and visual disorders, -speech disorders, - physical disorders, including cerebral palsy, - ADHD, - multiple disabilities, -emotional disorders.
